  中(zhong)國(guo)(guo),擁有上下(xia)五千年的文明歷史、縱橫一萬里的廣袤空間,古(gu)往今(jin)來(lai),國(guo)(guo)號(hao)遞更,名號(hao)眾多(duo),域外稱(cheng)謂繁雜。中(zhong)國(guo)(guo),作(zuo)為(wei)“中(zhong)華人(ren)民共和(he)國(guo)(guo)”的簡(jian)稱(cheng),如(ru)今(jin)在國(guo)(guo)際舞臺上是個響(xiang)亮的名字。它(ta)伴隨著鮮(xian)艷的五星紅旗和(he)嘹亮的《義勇(yong)軍進行(xing)曲(qu)》,令每一個中(zhong)國(guo)(guo)人(ren)感到血脈僨(fen)張,激(ji)情難抑(yi)。但“中(zhong)國(guo)(guo)”一名緣何(he)而來(lai),它(ta)是如(ru)何(he)演變發展的,我們絕大多(duo)數國(guo)(guo)人(ren)身處其(qi)境,卻不(bu)甚了然。

  這部(bu)詳細考索“中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)國(guo)(guo)”的(de)(de)(de)著作,堪稱是一(yi)(yi)部(bu)別樣的(de)(de)(de)中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)國(guo)(guo)史,它以(yi)“循名(ming)責實”的(de)(de)(de)方式,一(yi)(yi)一(yi)(yi)厘清(qing)四千(qian)余年間中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)國(guo)(guo)朝代(dai)(dai)更迭(die)取名(ming)的(de)(de)(de)復(fu)雜歷(li)程(cheng)。是書共分三(san)編(bian):上(shang)編(bian)“中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)國(guo)(guo)歷(li)代(dai)(dai)國(guo)(guo)號(hao)”,重點(dian)闡(chan)述(shu)(shu)了(le)(le)上(shang)自夏(xia)、商(shang)、周(zhou),下(xia)(xia)(xia)迄元(yuan)、明、清(qing),共24個為(wei)“天(tian)下(xia)(xia)(xia)共號(hao)”的(de)(de)(de)主要朝代(dai)(dai)的(de)(de)(de)名(ming)稱來歷(li),同時(shi)兼及(ji)“天(tian)下(xia)(xia)(xia)無(wu)主”時(shi)期(如(ru)“三(san)國(guo)(guo)”“十六(liu)國(guo)(guo)”“南北朝”“五代(dai)(dai)”“十國(guo)(guo)”時(shi)期)建(jian)立過政權的(de)(de)(de)40多個國(guo)(guo)號(hao)。中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)編(bian)“中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)國(guo)(guo)古今名(ming)號(hao)”,詳細闡(chan)述(shu)(shu)了(le)(le)“中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)國(guo)(guo)”一(yi)(yi)名(ming)及(ji)為(wei)今人(ren)所熟(shu)知的(de)(de)(de)異稱如(ru)“華(hua)夏(xia)”“中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)華(hua)”“九州”“赤縣神州”等,以(yi)及(ji)少為(wei)人(ren)知的(de)(de)(de)“區夏(xia)”“有(you)夏(xia)”“時(shi)夏(xia)”等數十個異名(ming)。下(xia)(xia)(xia)編(bian)“域(yu)外(wai)有(you)關中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)國(guo)(guo)的(de)(de)(de)稱謂(wei)(wei)”,詳述(shu)(shu)了(le)(le)Cini、Cina、Sin、China、Serice、Taugas、Cathayc等外(wai)國(guo)(guo)和外(wai)族對(dui)(dui)中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)國(guo)(guo)的(de)(de)(de)稱謂(wei)(wei),以(yi)及(ji)這些稱謂(wei)(wei)回譯成(cheng)中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)文的(de)(de)(de)“秦”“支那(nei)”“脂那(nei)”“真丹”“震旦(dan)”等的(de)(de)(de)歷(li)史淵源,其(qi)中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)尤其(qi)對(dui)(dui)“支那(nei)”一(yi)(yi)詞產生的(de)(de)(de)變味(wei)做了(le)(le)詳盡分析,對(dui)(dui)讀(du)者(zhe)了(le)(le)解(jie)近(jin)代(dai)(dai)中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)國(guo)(guo)與日本的(de)(de)(de)關系頗(po)有(you)啟發(fa)。

  據(ju)胡(hu)阿(a)祥(xiang)教授考察(cha),“中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)國(guo)(guo)”一(yi)名早在(zai)商周時期就已出現(xian),但在(zai)漫長(chang)的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)歷(li)(li)史(shi)長(chang)河中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong),它主要是(shi)(shi)作(zuo)為(wei)(wei)(wei)地(di)域(yu)概念(nian)和(he)文(wen)(wen)(wen)化概念(nian)而(er)(er)存(cun)在(zai)于世。作(zuo)為(wei)(wei)(wei)地(di)域(yu)概念(nian)的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)“中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)國(guo)(guo)”,是(shi)(shi)與自古(gu)以來(lai)我(wo)國(guo)(guo)先(xian)民(min)居(ju)于中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)原(yuan),并(bing)(bing)認為(wei)(wei)(wei)此(ci)(ci)處乃“中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)央四方之中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)”有關,這實(shi)際反(fan)映了古(gu)人(ren)的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)一(yi)種宇宙觀和(he)地(di)域(yu)觀,但不獨(du)我(wo)國(guo)(guo)如此(ci)(ci),他國(guo)(guo)他族對于其自身也(ye)(ye)有類(lei)似的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)觀念(nian)。正(zheng)因(yin)為(wei)(wei)(wei)此(ci)(ci),中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)國(guo)(guo)歷(li)(li)朝歷(li)(li)代(dai)另有專號(hao),以為(wei)(wei)(wei)國(guo)(guo)名,所取(qu)的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)標準則是(shi)(shi)“美”“偉”“妙”,無(wu)論是(shi)(shi)“秦”“漢(han)(han)”,還(huan)是(shi)(shi)“唐”“宋”,抑(yi)或是(shi)(shi)“明”“清(qing)”,無(wu)不如此(ci)(ci)。而(er)(er)作(zuo)為(wei)(wei)(wei)文(wen)(wen)(wen)化概念(nian)的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)國(guo)(guo),則與居(ju)于“正(zheng)朔”的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)原(yuan)王朝在(zai)經濟、文(wen)(wen)(wen)化上處于先(xian)進和(he)優(you)越(yue)有關,它也(ye)(ye)因(yin)此(ci)(ci)成為(wei)(wei)(wei)吸引“四夷(yi)”的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)精神(shen)標識,成為(wei)(wei)(wei)中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)華各民(min)族聯(lian)系的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)紐(niu)帶,無(wu)論是(shi)(shi)漢(han)(han)族建(jian)(jian)立(li)(li)(li)的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)政權(quan),還(huan)是(shi)(shi)非漢(han)(han)族建(jian)(jian)立(li)(li)(li)的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)政權(quan),凡入主中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)原(yuan)并(bing)(bing)奉此(ci)(ci)文(wen)(wen)(wen)化為(wei)(wei)(wei)正(zheng)統者,即自稱為(wei)(wei)(wei)“中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)國(guo)(guo)”,凡受此(ci)(ci)文(wen)(wen)(wen)化影(ying)響并(bing)(bing)積(ji)極融合者也(ye)(ye)便(bian)成為(wei)(wei)(wei)“中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)國(guo)(guo)”的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)一(yi)部分。后隨著歷(li)(li)史(shi)的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)發展,作(zuo)為(wei)(wei)(wei)地(di)域(yu)概念(nian)的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)國(guo)(guo)不斷擴大,而(er)(er)作(zuo)為(wei)(wei)(wei)文(wen)(wen)(wen)化概念(nian)的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)國(guo)(guo)也(ye)(ye)不斷強化,直至清(qing)代(dai),形成了譚其驤先(xian)生所說的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)“歷(li)(li)史(shi)中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)國(guo)(guo)”的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)范圍。1912年(nian)孫中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)山(shan)先(xian)生領導推翻清(qing)朝帝制,建(jian)(jian)立(li)(li)(li)“中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)華民(min)國(guo)(guo)”,作(zuo)為(wei)(wei)(wei)簡(jian)稱的(de)(de)(de)(de)(de)“中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)國(guo)(guo)”最(zui)終成為(wei)(wei)(wei)近代(dai)政治實(shi)體概念(nian)。1949年(nian)“中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)華人(ren)民(min)共和(he)國(guo)(guo)”成立(li)(li)(li)后,“中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)國(guo)(guo)”一(yi)名更(geng)是(shi)(shi)響徹于世界舞(wu)臺(tai)。

  二

  從《吾國與(yu)吾民》一書中,我們可以得到(dao)這樣幾點體會:

  “中國(guo)”作為(wei)地域概(gai)念和(he)文化概(gai)念的(de)(de)(de)歷(li)(li)史存在,是(shi)(shi)(shi)與(yu)各(ge)(ge)時期名目繁多的(de)(de)(de)國(guo)號(hao)并行不悖的(de)(de)(de)。或者說(shuo)“中國(guo)”是(shi)(shi)(shi)一(yi)(yi)個象征的(de)(de)(de)名號(hao),而歷(li)(li)朝歷(li)(li)代的(de)(de)(de)國(guo)號(hao)是(shi)(shi)(shi)具體(ti)活動的(de)(de)(de)實體(ti)。弄(nong)清(qing)了這一(yi)(yi)點,我們(men)(men)就知道,中國(guo)作為(wei)一(yi)(yi)個多民(min)族國(guo)家(jia),其(qi)豐富(fu)的(de)(de)(de)歷(li)(li)史和(he)燦爛的(de)(de)(de)文化是(shi)(shi)(shi)活躍(yue)于其(qi)境(jing)的(de)(de)(de)各(ge)(ge)民(min)族共(gong)(gong)同創造的(de)(de)(de)。維護各(ge)(ge)民(min)族的(de)(de)(de)團結,建設好我們(men)(men)中華民(min)族共(gong)(gong)同的(de)(de)(de)家(jia)園,既(ji)是(shi)(shi)(shi)歷(li)(li)史賦予(yu)的(de)(de)(de)責(ze)任(ren),也是(shi)(shi)(shi)現實努力(li)的(de)(de)(de)方向(xiang)。

  “中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)國(guo)(guo)(guo)”這一名號的(de)(de)形成,雖有某些歷史的(de)(de)偶然性(xing),但它所呈現出的(de)(de)意(yi)義,又與(yu)中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)國(guo)(guo)(guo)傳統(tong)文(wen)化特(te)別是儒(ru)家(jia)思想(xiang)相映生趣(qu),這就反映了歷史的(de)(de)必(bi)然性(xing)。中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)國(guo)(guo)(guo)在(zai)(zai)先秦時(shi)期經歷了百家(jia)爭鳴,至漢武帝時(shi)“獨尊儒(ru)術”,儒(ru)家(jia)思想(xiang)自此成為歷史中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)國(guo)(guo)(guo)的(de)(de)主流意(yi)識形態。而儒(ru)家(jia)思想(xiang)的(de)(de)哲學基(ji)礎是“中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)庸”,即凡事不偏頗,治國(guo)(guo)(guo)理政重“王道(dao)”輕“霸道(dao)”,為人(ren)處世反對“過(guo)猶(you)不及”,處理“四夷”強(qiang)調(diao)“近者悅,遠者來”。正(zheng)如(ru)胡阿祥教授(shou)在(zai)(zai)書中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)所說:“中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)國(guo)(guo)(guo)傳統(tong)文(wen)化的(de)(de)精(jing)神與(yu)中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)國(guo)(guo)(guo)人(ren)的(de)(de)典型行(xing)為,凝聚在(zai)(zai)一個意(yi)蘊豐富而且深刻的(de)(de)‘中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)’字之上(shang)……這樣的(de)(de)‘中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)國(guo)(guo)(guo)人(ren)’正(zheng)與(yu)‘中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)國(guo)(guo)(guo)’之‘中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)’協調(diao)合一。”今天,我們倡導弘揚中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)國(guo)(guo)(guo)傳統(tong)優秀(xiu)文(wen)化,理應很好地理解自身國(guo)(guo)(guo)號“中(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)(zhong)國(guo)(guo)(guo)”的(de)(de)深刻內(nei)涵。

  國(guo)(guo)號(hao)的(de)(de)(de)(de)形成雖有(you)種(zhong)種(zhong)歷史(shi)原因,但一(yi)旦(dan)形成便成為(wei)(wei)一(yi)個(ge)國(guo)(guo)家的(de)(de)(de)(de)精(jing)神(shen)標識,對一(yi)國(guo)(guo)民眾起到(dao)精(jing)神(shen)紐帶的(de)(de)(de)(de)作(zuo)用。像我(wo)(wo)們中(zhong)國(guo)(guo)這(zhe)樣歷史(shi)與文(wen)(wen)化(hua)源遠(yuan)流長的(de)(de)(de)(de)國(guo)(guo)家,尤(you)其(qi)如(ru)此。所以當我(wo)(wo)們在國(guo)(guo)外(wai)工(gong)作(zuo)、旅游時,只要聽到(dao)或看到(dao)“中(zhong)國(guo)(guo)”二字(zi)(zi),就會(hui)(hui)產生(sheng)莫名的(de)(de)(de)(de)激動(dong);當我(wo)(wo)們看到(dao)素昧平生(sheng)的(de)(de)(de)(de)本國(guo)(guo)同(tong)(tong)胞(bao)時,也(ye)會(hui)(hui)油然而生(sheng)一(yi)種(zhong)親切(qie)感(gan)。同(tong)(tong)樣,當有(you)人(ren)(ren)污(wu)名化(hua)“中(zhong)國(guo)(guo)”的(de)(de)(de)(de)時候,我(wo)(wo)們也(ye)會(hui)(hui)心生(sheng)不悅。因為(wei)(wei)“中(zhong)國(guo)(guo)”二字(zi)(zi)對每(mei)一(yi)個(ge)中(zhong)國(guo)(guo)人(ren)(ren)來說(shuo),蘊含著一(yi)種(zhong)精(jing)神(shen)契合、文(wen)(wen)化(hua)認同(tong)(tong),是一(yi)個(ge)神(shen)圣的(de)(de)(de)(de)稱(cheng)號(hao)。由此,我(wo)(wo)們說(shuo)一(yi)部(bu)國(guo)(guo)名史(shi),也(ye)是一(yi)部(bu)別樣的(de)(de)(de)(de)國(guo)(guo)家史(shi),它(ta)濃縮了一(yi)個(ge)國(guo)(guo)家的(de)(de)(de)(de)歷史(shi),反(fan)映了一(yi)個(ge)國(guo)(guo)家的(de)(de)(de)(de)文(wen)(wen)化(hua)觀和價值(zhi)觀。
